A personal goal for 2024 was to commit to indoor rock climbing. I leaned into what I know about creating new habits – finding an accountability partner (my sister), getting the right equipment, and setting regular times. I felt well prepared, and still it has proven to be both a physical and psychological challenge climbing the wall. Having a partner has been invaluable. There is safety and trust in having someone saying “gotcha” when you say “falling.” There is also the boost to your sense of power with hearing encouragement from below that you can reach another inch to grip that next hold.
I have been reminded of many important lessons through climbing:
All of these lessons also serve me well as I continue to travel on my personal trauma informed journey as well as the journey of the NYS TINRC. The climb towards creating our new initiatives, Storytellers in Residence Storytellers in Residence and our podcast Pathways: Becoming Trauma-Responsive, Pathways: Becoming Trauma-Responsive, has taken us in new directions that could not have been predicted when we began. Jamie Hagenbuch’s story, , My journey in Mental Health & RTIC Trauma-Informed Care Mental Health & RTIC Trauma-Informed Care My journey in , resonated with me for this same reason. She started on a pathway not knowing fully where she would land and much has been gained along the way. I anticipate that this type of shared experienced will be felt and celebrated at our 2nd Annual Conference Annual Conference in October. I look forward to learning about your climbs and receiving a few pointers about what you have learned along the way.
With gratitude,
Elizabeth

I am a mom, colleague, family member and friend. I have three teens, pray for me, and lived experiences that made me believe I knew the best way to communicate in any situation and with those around me. However, this belief was far from the truth. I learned quickly that just because I was raised a certain way doesn’t necessarily equip me with the tools I needed to help my own child and family when in need. By staying open minded, always learning, and utilizing the tools I’ve learned is what will change and save lives.
