Elementor Single Post #11056

Having trauma-informed practices relegated to the category of “soft skills” has always made me
bristle.

It felt like the unsaid message was that embracing practices that promote safety,
connection, and trust were somehow “less than” or niche, but not essential in comparison to
documented processes and technical skills.

I have sat at many tables in which these “hard
skills” were promoted as the solution to improve services and reduce disparities without any
thought to the way in which these services and supports were delivered.

At first, I sought a different way to describe trauma responsive practice – moving away from soft
to impact. Upon further reflection, I have reached a different conclusion and paradigm shift.
What if we reclaim the inherent value of soft? In this mindset, kindness, empathy, and
compassion are the essential building blocks. With this shift comes the understanding that these
soft skills are not only desirable in the workplace but absolutely necessary for both positive
outcomes and fiscal viability.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it seems like the perfect time to recognize and elevate
soft skills. I encourage you to read about the accomplishments of six leaders in the field of
trauma-informed care and treatment – and how their contributions have fundamentally changed
the landscape of the how we deliver care.

May you inspired to experiment with being soft and discover the pliable strength that lies
beneath.

With gratitude,
Elizabeth
