Sexual assault is a deeply traumatic experience that affects millions of people around the world each year.
According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 3 American women and 1 in 6 American men experience sexual violence in their lifetime. It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 rapes and assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, and one-third of those are committed by a family member.
The impact of sexual trauma can be complex and long-lasting, affecting mental, emotional, and physical well-being and functioning. Many survivors may experience PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
In addition to the trauma of the assault itself, people often face shame, stigma, and skepticism when coming forward and telling others what happened to them. The lack of trauma-informed care and practices by first responders (police, medical, legal, etc.) can be harmful and retraumatizing for victims.
However, it’s important to remember that healing is possible with the right support, and there are many people and advocacy organizations who not only believe – but also fight for – sexual assault survivors.
At the NYS Trauma-Informed Network & Resource Center, we recognize that trauma-informed care is essential in helping survivors reclaim their sense of safety and control after an assault. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we’ve compiled a list of resources for sexual assault survivors, as well as loved ones and professionals looking to support victims.
Whether you’re seeking crisis support, therapy options, or advocacy services, these organizations and tools can help guide you on the journey to healing.
