November 2024 Newsletter

December 18, 2024

I am a paper person, someone who prefers a pen and a fresh page where I can take notes, doodle on the margins and write down reminders to myself that I may or may not look at again. While I have both my outlook and google calendars to track my comings and goings, I still keep a physical planner, with a weekly calendar and associated to do’s. Each week, there is a new quote when I turn the page, providing an opportunity for reflection. This week’s inspiration – “Invent your world. Surround yourself with people, color, sounds and work that nourish you.” – Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy

Looking back on 2024, I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to do just that through the NYS TINRC. My circle of accomplices in this movement has grown and I have new relationships across the state which inspire and fuel me as we work collectively towards a world that promotes well-being, belonging and equity. I am grounded by green and elevated by purple – our TINRC colors reflecting our purpose and promise. The echo of voices replays in my mind’s eye as I recall the many stories shared and calls to action at TINRC on Tour stops, Advisory Council and Quarterly meetings and the Annual Conference. And there is the sound of the single clap, our signature close out, inspired by Gwen Olton. And of course, there is the work itself and in that regard my cup is full. To reflect upon what has been accomplished by the TINRC team in partnership with OMH, our partners, the Advisory Council and all of you, is truly astounding.

May your world be filled with what nourishes you.

With gratitude,

Elizabeth

Defenders of Tomorrow: Pioneering Pathways to Justice
by Vincent I. French, MAT, CAS

Justice is not a static concept; it is a living, evolving commitment to equity, fairness, and humanity. At the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office, this ethos drives every action we take. It is a belief rooted in history and service, in the very foundation of public defense as a safeguard for the vulnerable and marginalized. It is also what inspired me to create the Defenders of Tomorrow program—an initiativethat connects young people to the legal system while embedding the values of trauma-informed care and equitable access into every step.
